Postcards from Young America

Jason's trip notes from Portland to Savannah.

My train got in early. It was supposed to get in a 6:15 AM, which is early enough, but today it got in a 5:15 AM. I stayed on the train until about six, because the train wasn’t leaving station until 6:20. It was hard to fall back asleep. I walked to my hostel.

I got in just fine, got a room, and did some work. I couldn’t check into my bunk dorm until 2. I locked up my bag and decided to get some breakfast. This is where my long stream of suggestions began.

The woman at the front desk suggested a place for breakfast: Magpie Caterer.

It was a bit of a walk, but good food. I drank a cup of coffee. I never drink coffee. From there I asked the woman working the register where to go next. She suggested a book store: Avid Reader.

The book store felt like it could belong anywhere. Not too much of local flare, but they had a great table of books featured on NPR. There were about five books worth buying, if only I had a way to carry them. I ask the clerk where I should go next. He suggested a record store across the parking lot: Dimple Records‎.

There were amazing box sets of records on the walls; rare Dylan demos to original Hendrix albums, all of which were priced over 180 bucks. The only downfall, they didn’t have a suggestion for me. I ended up going to the capitol.

At the capital I got a text from a friend suggesting the Crocker Art Museum. Perfect, I headed there next.

I spent almost three hours at the museum. There was a field trip group that day. Almost 50 second graders were in the museum with me. I thought it was going to be awful, but it ended up being really entertaining. Kids are either totally bored out of their mind when it comes to art or completely enthralled. I was a little jealous. A kid can look at a piece of art and instantly know if they like it or not. When we get older, we can get too critical and over analytical of art.

After the museum I was pretty tired, seeing how I’ve been walking for almost seven hours.

I’m back at the HI Sacramento Hostel. It’s beautiful, yet very quiet. I’ll talk more about that later.
